James Baldwin’s Ideas and Activism during the 1980s

Why aren’t Black people more optimistic? Is it at once getting much better and hopeless? To shed light on these, we only need to return to James Baldwin who eloquently and cogently put it best regarding race, optimism, and the future of America: “I am not a pessimist because I am alive. To be a pessimist, it means that you have agreed that human life is an academic matter. So I am forced to be an optimist. I’m forced to believe that we can survive whatever we must survive.” The future of Black people, Baldwin continues, is “precisely as bright or as dark as the future of the country. It is entirely up to the American people and our representatives [. . .] whether or not they will deal with and embrace the stranger they have maligned for so long.” Source: “Why Aren’t Black People More Optimistic?” – AAIHS “I think I know how many times one has to start again, and how often one feels that one cannot start again,”  Baldwin once wrote , but “one can never remain where one is” becaus

The Dawn of Detroit

READ: ‘The Dawn of Detroit’: An Interview with Historian Tiya Miles – AAIHS Miles: I realized several years ago that although my histories of Cherokee slavery unfolded on farms and plantations, I was missing the opportunity to think more seriously about land and other features of the material (or natural) world in a way that might enrich my attempt at understanding. The Detroit study seemed to demand a greater awareness of environmental history for reasons that your question highlights, so I applied for a Mellon New Directions Fellowship to seek an orientation to the field of environmental history. I spent a year talking and studying with colleagues at Montana State University where there is a strong faculty cluster in this field, and I learned to ask new questions. My study of Detroit is not an environmental history per se, but it does bring in a consciousness not only of the critical import of the material environment to histories of race and power , but also of the n

RACE: Are We So Different?

Remember: there are two humans on this planet: man and woman. That is the concept people can't seem to grasp. Forget religion and start with sexism, the all-time ism.

Eugenic Agendas

‘BlacKkKlansman’ and William Shockley’s Eugenic Agenda By Alexandra Fair Even as eugenic theorists professed a distinction between themselves and the Ku Klux Klan, their financial commitment to the White Citizens’ Council (WCC) spoke volumes.  While the White Citizens’ Council was no Blackkklansman-esque Klan organization, its members were equally as dangerous.  READ

Glasgow University reveals £200m profits in slave trade

Glasgow University reveals £200m slave trade windfall - and plans for new slavery study centre Helen McArdle, September 16, 2018, The Herald ONE of Scotland's leading universities received benefits worth the equivalent of up to £199 million from slave trade cash, researchers have found. Glasgow University carried out a year-long study into thousands of donations made in the 18th and 19th centuries and discovered some were linked to slave trade profits, despite the university's leading role in the abolitionist movement. The university has now announced plans to create a centre for the study of slavery and a memorial or tribute in university grounds in the name of the enslaved as part of a reparative justice programme. The research identified 16 bursaries, endowments and bequests donated between 1809 and 1937 from people whose wealth at least in part derived from slavery. Donations to the 1866-1880 campaign to build current campus at Gilmorehill found 23 peo

Nature and the Great Migration in Chicago

Towering skyscrapers dotting the Lake Michigan coastline, “snowy winds,” “blistering suns,” and roaring streets described what Richard Wright aptly called the “iron city,” or the city of Chicago. While Chicago’s landscape has changed drastically since Wright walked the concrete jungle, it remains one of the most prominent cities in the nation. It is home to a large African American population, many of whom have roots in the Great Migration that brought literary giants such as Wright and Langston Hughes to its shores. The Criminalization of Black Children

In the late nineteenth century, progressive reformers recoiled at the prospect of the justice system punishing children as adults. Advocating that children’s inherent innocence warranted fundamentally different treatment, reformers founded the nation’s first juvenile court in Chicago in 1899. Yet amid an influx of new African American arrivals to the city during the Great Migration , notions of inherent childhood innocence and juvenile justice were circumscribed by race. In documenting how Blackness became a marker of criminality that overrode the potential protections the status of “child” could have bestowed, Tera Eva Agyepong shows the entanglements between race and the state’s transition to a more punitive form of juvenile justice. In this important study, Agyepong expands the narrative of racialized criminalization in America, revealing that these patterns became embedded in a justice system originally intended to protect children. In doing so, she also complicates our understandi

Sexism: Women were being set up to fail #GlassCliff

And what would you say if I told you that the number of female C.E.O.’s in the Fortune 500 recently hit an all-time high? It’s cause for celebration, right? But let’s look at the actual numbers. Out of those 500 companies, there were, as of early 2018, 27 female C.E.O.’s. 5.4 percent. Why? We are several decades into a revolution that brought hundreds of millions of women into the global workforce. And 40 percent of managers are women. So what’s keeping more of them from reaching the top? To be sure, it’s a complex question with a number of factors, some of which you’ve surely thought about. But there’s one you probably haven’t thought about; probably haven’t even heard of it. Let’s start … here. ...Ryan’s analysis suggested that women were being set up to fail, whether intentionally or not. Such a failure would reflect poorly not only on the woman in question, but quite possibly on female candidates to follow. Ryan’s research did have its limitations. It covered only British compan

absolute power depends on absolute control over knowledge, which in turn necessitates absolute corruption

Think about this

“Politicians, Priests, and psychiatrists often face the same problem: how to find the most rapid and permanent means of changing a man’s belief…The problem of the doctor and his nervously ill patient, and that of the religious leader who sets out to gain and hold new converts, has now become the problem of whole groups of nations, who wish not only to confirm certain political beliefs within their boundaries, but to proselytize the outside world.” – William Sargant “Battle of the Mind”
